Vazhakkai Bajji / Plantain Fritters

Sir-kku Rendu Vazhakkai Bajji, Oru Tea, remember this diagolue from the movie Sivaji. Arun was repeating the same when he saw that I was making the vazhakkai bajji last evening for snack.  It just tasted so yummy.

Vazhakkai Bajji
You’ll Need:
Vazhakkai / Raw banana / Plantain – 1
Bengal gram flour / Kadalaimavu – 1 cup
Rice flour / Arisimavu– ¼ cup
Baking soda / cooking soda – ¼ tsp (optional)
Salt – to taste
Asafetida – 2 pinch
Ajwain – 2 pinch
Red food color – 2 pinch (optional)
Water – as required
Oil – for deep frying

Peel away the skin of the vazhakkai and cut them into two. You can also use it as a whole but I cut it for easy handling. Thinly slice them length wise and keep it ready.

Combine the gram flour, rice flour, baking soda, asafetida, ajwain, red chilli powder, food color and salt together. If you want you can sieve them together also.

Add water and mix into a thick batter. The batter should be of dropping consistency. Heat the oil in a pan / kadai. Dip the vazhakkai slices in the batter and drop them in the hot oil. Deep fry to a golden brown and remove on a paper napkin to take off excess oil. Serve hot with hotel coconut chutney.

Note: I did not use the baking soda and food color. The flours and chilli powder are home made.

This is for my event "Deep Fried Snacks".

Bon Appetit !!!
